Advanced Tennis Forehand Techniques and More
courtesy of FuzzyYellowBalls.com

After mastering the classic and windshield wiper techniques, these videos will take your tennis forehand to the next level.  In this section you will find videos on how to create more top spin on your forehand, how to hit running and high tennis forehands, information on the different stances for hitting the tennis forehand and the proper wrist position for the tennis forehand swing.

Creating More Topspin on your Forehand

This video explains how topspin is created when you hit the tennis ball.  The amount of topspin on the forehand is determined by the direction the strings are moving across the ball, not the angle of the racket face.  In this video you will see examples of the racket moving up across the tennis ball.  Notice this movement is what is creating the spin on the tennis ball.  Not the angle of the racket.  The angle is what determines the direction the tennis ball will travel off of the racket.

How to Hit a Running Forehand

This video explains the differences between hitting a tennis forehand while on the run and the classic forehand.  The running forehand requires you to change your swing path and follow through because you will not be able to set your feet and your body is not in the position to allow the normal mechanics.  Being on the run also forces you to simplify your swing because you could be in a closed stance when swinging.  This will make it very hard to rotate the body and follow through.

How to Hit a High Forehand

Hitting the high tennis forehand is a difficult shot for most beginning players.  The mechanics of hitting the high forehand are very similar to the normal one.  The difference is that instead of dropping the racquet down for the “C” shape you will keep the arm and racket high to handle the higher ball.  This video features Oliver Akli hitting the high tennis forehand.

Open, Closed and Neutral Forehand Stances

This video explains the different ways you can position your feet for the tennis forehand.  These are the open stance, neutral stance and the closed stance.  This video features examples of hitting with the open and neutral stances from Andy Roddick and Gael Monfils.  It also shows Hyung Taik-Lee hitting with the closed stance.

Proper Wrist Position for the Forehand Swing

This video explains the correct positioning of your wrist during the contact of the tennis forehand.  Many people think you should snap your wrist over or pronate your wrist during the forehand shot.  While there are some professional players who pronate the wrist during their forehand (Roger Federer comes to mind), this is not the norm for the tennis forehand.  The wrist positioning is does not change as you hit the ball.  It’s after contact, during follow through, that you turn the wrist over and read your watch.  This video features classic forehands from Frank Salazar and the windshield wiper forehand from Oliver Akli.
